Laparoscopic & Robotic Surgery

Laparoscopic and robotic surgery are minimally invasive approaches that reach the abdominal organs through small incisions of 0.5-1 cm in diameter, using a high-resolution camera and long instruments. In a robotic system, the surgeon controls the operation from a console, working through instruments that provide three-dimensional, tremor-free vision and a wider range of motion than the human wrist.

Compared with open surgery, these methods result in less pain, less bleeding, a shorter hospital stay and a faster return to daily life. In oncological procedures, results equivalent to open surgery can be achieved in terms of lymph node clearance and tissue integrity.

Is robotic surgery safer than open surgery?

Will there be a scar?

Small scars of 0.5-1 cm remain from the port entry sites; these scars fade over time and are generally not aesthetically bothersome.

Does the operation take longer than open surgery?

The initial step may take slightly longer due to the robotic setup; in experienced hands the total time is similar to that of open surgery.

Is robotic surgery covered by insurance?

Laparoscopic procedures are covered by the social security system and many private insurers. The additional robotic fee may vary from institution to institution and is clarified during the preliminary evaluation.
