The Importance of Early Diagnosis in Colon Cancer

Colon cancer is among the most common cancers in Turkey and worldwide. When detected at an early stage, 5-year survival rates can reach around 90 percent, whereas this rate drops markedly in advanced-stage cases.

Screening recommendations begin with colonoscopy at age 45 to 50 if there is no family history. If there is a history of colon cancer in a first-degree relative or a suspected genetic syndrome, the screening age is brought forward.

Symptoms such as bloody stools, changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, anemia and abdominal pain require consulting a doctor. These findings do not always mean cancer, but they should not be neglected.

In modern surgery, laparoscopic and robotic techniques have become applicable in the great majority of colon cancer cases. Depending on the stage of the tumor, chemotherapy may be planned in addition to surgery.

Early diagnosis is the single most important factor directly affecting both life expectancy and quality of life. Regular check-ups, staying alert when there is a family risk, and consulting a doctor at the first complaint save lives.
